New York City (September 19, 2013)NYC & Company, the City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organization, is encouraging visitors to book travel to New York City’s five boroughs in time for the 2013 holiday season. Celebrations will take place throughout the City starting in November, with both time-honoured and new events bringing the vibrant destination alive with holiday cheer. Visitors are encouraged to explore beyond the City’s classic holiday events and activities and see the hidden treasures that make the five boroughs unique during the holidays.

“There is no better place to be during the holiday season than New York City – it’s a time when visitors can experience first-hand the unique beauty, energy and vibrancy of one of the world’s most famous destinations,” said George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Company. “We are forecasting approximately 5 million visitors will come to the City between Thanksgiving and New Year’s so we encourage visitors to make their travel plans in advance.”

Kicking off the joyous holiday season are the more than 8,000 participants in the 87th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 28. The festive march is quickly followed by the much-anticipated Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting on December 4. In the meantime, visitors can revel in the beauty of stunning holiday-inspired window decorations in some of the City’s famed stores and hotels. Equally as spectacular but lesser-known are the Louis Armstrong House Museum’s special guided holiday historic house tours, taking place from December 3 to 30 in Queens (louisarmstronghouse.org) and Wave Hill’s holiday craft activities on December 7 and 8 in the Bronx (wavehill.org).

Highlights of holiday events taking place in the five boroughs follows:

MANHATTAN

The 87th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (macys.com/parade) will march down the streets of New York City on November 28, 9am. Stepping off with its giant helium character balloons, fantasy-filled floats, marching bands, performance groups and gaggle of clowns, “America’s Parade” promises nonstop pomp and pageantry for spectators young and old. Fans will enjoy seeing returning giant balloons, including Hello Kitty, Papa Smurf, Kermit the Frog and The Elf on the Shelf. Debuting in the ballooning lineup this year will be the newest version of the iconic character Snoopy, Adventure Time’s Finn and Jake and new balloon-head characters from The Wizard of Oz; among other new stars. As before, the 2013 parade route will kick off at 77th Street and Central Park West. The parade will then march down to Columbus Circle, where it will turn onto Central Park South before making its way straight down Midtown Manhattan on Sixth Avenue from 59th to 34th Streets. The parade concludes with its final turn onto 34th Street in front of Macy’s Herald Square.

The famous Radio City Music Hall’s Radio City Christmas Spectacular will amaze locals and visitors from November 8 to December 30. This year’s show includes a new scene that will turn the stage into a glistening winter wonderland. To purchase tickets, visit radiocitychristmas.com.

Nominated for three Tony Awards in its 2012 season, A Christmas Story: The Musical is playing at the Theater at Madison Square Garden from December 11 to 29. To purchase tickets, visit theateratmsg.com.

Starting November 29, New York City Ballet will present one of the season’s favorite annual productions, George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, complete with marching toy soldiers, a one-ton Christmas tree that grows before the audience’s eyes and crystalline snowflakes. The show runs through January 4 (nycballet.com).

This holiday season, Carnegie Hall will come alive with Musica Sacra Chorus and Orchestra’s rendition of Handel’s Messiah. Performances will take place on December 12 and 15 (carnegiehall.org).

The American Museum of Natural History is celebrating the holiday season with two events this year: its famous Origami Holiday Tree, on display from November 25 to January 5, and a Kwanzaa Celebration on December 28.

A hidden gem in Upper Manhattan, the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden will conduct candlelight tours on December 6 and 7. As December 6 is St. Nicholas Day, tours will kick off with a reading of Clement Clark Moore’s famous poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” The following day, visitors can enjoy music in the Upper Hall.

23 Days of Flatiron Cheer will take place in the Flatiron District this holiday season with events, promotions, giveaways and more. Don’t forget to take a photo next to the giant pop-up holiday card at the intersection of Broadway, 23rd Street and Fifth Avenue (flatironbid.com/holiday).

The Big Apple Circus is coming to Lincoln Center from October 25 to January 12. This annual show is a New York City holiday season favourite; this year’s show, Luminocity, is a brand-new spectacle that won’t disappoint (bigapplecircus.org).

The Lighting of the World’s Largest Hanukkah Menorah will take place at Grand Army Plaza, West 59th Street and Fifth Avenue, in front of The Plaza Hotel, from November 27 to December 5.

Le Parker Meridien will host its fourth annual Gingerbread Extravaganza from December 6 to January 6 with the theme “Quintessential New York.” Local bakeries and restaurants will create the gingerbread masterpieces, and visitors can vote for their favourite by purchasing one ticket at the hotel’s concierge for $1 or eight tickets for $5. Proceeds will go to City Harvest (parkermeridien.com).

THE BRONX

Family visitors will love the New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show, which features model trains travelling through more than 100 scaled replicas of NYC landmarks, including the Brooklyn Bridge and Yankee Stadium, made from natural materials such as bark, twig and seeds. The show will be on display between November 16 and January 12 (nybg.org).

The Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum Annual Holiday Family Day will take place on December 6. Families will love the festively decorated 19th-century mansion and can participate in various kids’ activities, including photos with Santa Claus (bpmm.org).

BROOKLYN

Thousands of visitors travel from all over to behold the borough’s famed Dyker Heights Christmas Lights. Each year, the neighbourhood goes all out with spectacular lighting exhibits, complete with 30-foot toy soldiers and nativity scenes. For a guided experience, check out A Slice of Brooklyn’s Christmas Lights & Cannoli Tour, which also offers festive holiday music and old-time Christmas television variety specials on the bus, topped off with a taste of Brooklyn’s best cannoli and hot chocolate. Tours run from November 30 to December 31 (asliceofbrooklyn.com).

Brooklyn Borough Hall lights up with holiday spirit each year, with the lighting of this year’s Menorah of Brooklyn taking place at Columbus Park (right outside of Borough Hall) on December 3 at 5pm. The following week, a Christmas Tree Lighting will take place in Borough Hall Plaza on December 10 at 6pm (brooklyn-usa.org).

QUEENS

The Queens Historical Society presents the Annual Historic Holiday House Tour on December 8 from 1–5pm. The guided trolley tour includes stops at seven festively decorated museums and historical sites in Queens: the Kingsland Homestead, the Flushing Quaker Meeting House, Flushing Town Hall, the Voelker Orth Museum, Lewis H. Latimer House, Louis Armstrong House and Museum, and the Bowne House. Pre-sale tickets cost $10 for adults; tickets at the door cost $12. Free admission for children under 12 (queenshistoricalsociety.org).

Take a tour of the decorated Queens County Farm Museum during the Holiday Open House from December 26 to 28. Visitors can sip on mulled cider while children partake in winter craft activities. For more information, go to queensfarm.org.

STATEN ISLAND

Historic Richmond Town will hold its annual holiday favourite, Candlelight Tours, on December 14. The town will be ablaze with the light provided by candles, oil lamps and flickering fireplaces. BROOKLYN:

For over 25 years, Brooklyn has been coming alive for the holidays with the Christmas lights of Dyker Heights. Truly a sight to behold, the spectacle attracts thousands of visitors during the holiday season. The best displays can be seen on the blocks between 83rd and 86th Streets from 11th to 13th Avenue in this small neighborhood between Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst. Enjoy the holiday light displays and sample desserts from an authentic Brooklyn neighborhood pastry shop with A Slice of Brooklyn’s Christmas Lights and Cannoli Tour. Join Brooklyn Borough Hall President Marty Markowitz in a lighting ceremony of the Menorah of Brooklyn at Borough Hall Plaza with refreshments and entertainment on December 10.

MANHATTAN:

Twelve 14-foot colour-lighted stars will “dance” to holiday music in the Great Room with 150-foot ceilings at the Time Warner Center. Not only is the show enchanting, but it is also the largest specialty-crafted display of illuminated colour in the world. Le Parker Meridien will host its fourth annual Gingerbread Extravaganza. This year, local pastry chefs will create large-scale confectionary creations highlighting monuments from around the world, on display from December 1 to January 3, 2013. All proceeds will benefit City Harvest, an organization that rescues food to feed hungry New Yorkers (parkermeridien.com).

QUEENS:

The Queens Historical Society presents the annual Historic Holiday House Tour on Sunday, December 9, from 1 to 5pm. This guided trolley tour includes stops at five festively-decorated museums and historical sites, including the Queens Historical Society at the Kingsland Homestead, the Flushing Quaker Meeting House, Flushing Town Hall, the Voelker Orth Museum and Lewis H. Latimer House. A local historian will narrate the tour, and visitors will have access to all exhibits at each site, which will also feature holiday refreshments and family activities. Tickets cost $10 for adults, with children under 12 free, and can be purchased in advance from the Queens Historical Society or from any of the participating sites the day of the event (queenshistoricalsociety.org).

STATEN ISLAND:

In Staten Island, visitors can see the sights and sounds of Historic Richmond Town at its festive best. On December 2, from 10am to 5pm, Historic Richmond Town will host Christmas in Richmond Town, sponsored by the Women’s Auxiliary. The day’s activities will close with a tree lighting at 5pm. New York City (September 12, 2012) — New York City’s famed Statue of Liberty will reopen to the public on October 28, 2012, her 126th birthday, after a year-long renovation.

Visitors will be allowed entrance on a limited basis while the $27.25 million-project, which included long-planned safety and other critical facility renovations, moves to completion by the end of 2012.

Located on a 12-acre island in New York Harbor, the Statue, Liberty Enlightening the World, was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States, and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.

In recognition of this achievement, Mayor Bloomberg today presented the Johnson family from Lichfield, England with a “golden ticket” to New York City and named them the honorary 50 millionth visitors to New York City. The announcement was made in iconic Times Square – the crossroads of the world – as video screens flashed “50 million” and more than 100 members of the tourism industry joined to celebrate the historic moment. Mayor Bloomberg was also joined by New York Hotel & Motel Trades Council President Peter Ward and members of the City’s tourism industry.

 

“Five and half years ago, we set an ambitious goal to reach 50 million visitors by 2015, and in 2008, we accelerated that goal to be the end of 2012,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Today, we know that we will exceed this significant milestone by year’s end.  New York City’s quality of life has contributed to this great success and we are confident we will sustain the success of our tourism industry in the months and years ahead.”

 

NYC & Company forecasts the City will attract a record-breaking 10.1 million international visitors in 2011, a 4 percent increase over 2010. The United Kingdom, which is home to the Johnson family, is the top market of origin for overseas visitors with more than 1 million visitors expected by the end of 2011 – a two percent increase. The City also expects to attract a record-breaking 40.1 million domestic visitors – 2.9 percent more than last year. New York City is also on track to generate $32 billion in visitor spending, $48 billion in economic impact and contribute to approximately 320,000 jobs across the five boroughs.  The City remains the number one U.S. city destination for tourism spending.

 

New York City continues to hold its position as the number one port of entry for the U.S. and the number one U.S. destination for overseas travel with approximately one out of every three visitors to the U.S. visiting the five boroughs. Since 2006, New York City has continued to increase its market share for all inbound international travel to the U.S. growing from a 28 percent market share to a nearly 33 percent market share for 2010. Each additional share point captured by New York City accounts for approximately $600 million dollars in spending to the five boroughs.

Craig Johnson, a self-employed carpenter and Lucy Foulger Johnson, a homemaker, live in Lichfield England, near Birmingham, and have traveled to New York City to hold their wedding ceremony at Top of the Rock on Tuesday, which will be planned by NYC & Company member Ultimate USA Weddings. The Johnsons first visited New York City 10 years ago and, for this visit, are joined by members of their family including their children Grace, three years old, and Thomas, one year old, to celebrate their wedding.  The Johnsons are visiting New York City through December 22.

 

To mark the occasion, signs across Times Square carried the message of the 50 million visitor milestone.  Participating screens included: 1515 Broadway (SL Green Realty Corporation & Orange Barrel Media), American Eagle Times Square Spectacular, the Clear Channel Spectacolor screen at 1560 Broadway, Hard Rock Cafe New York, NASDAQ and Reuters screens (Times Square2, A Reuters/NASDAQ Alliance), the Walgreens Times Square Spectacular and the Toshiba Vision Sign.   


            By year’s end, New York City will be home to more than 90,000 hotel rooms throughout all five boroughs, a 24 percent increase since 2006.  The City is also on track to sell a record 27 million hotel room nights, 4.5 percent more than 2010, when NYC sold 25.8 million room nights. NYC & Company plans to build on its overseas tourism growth in 2012, a market that makes up 20 percent of total visitors, but 50 percent of total visitor spending. The organization has plans to launch new tourism development initiatives in North America, including Mexico and Canada.

 

NYC & Company has also expanded its efforts to promote New York City as a destination for meetings, incentive travel, tradeshows and major events.  The organization has sales offices covering Washington DC, the West Coast and Midwest regions, as well as in the UK. New York City hosts nearly four million convention delegates annually and convention travel to the City accounts for approximately one third of all business travel generating almost $3 billion in directing spending and $5 billion in economic impact.  Overall, attendance at the annual tradeshows is up this year, with many experiencing record-breaking attendance despite the national trend. 

 

 In June of 2006 Mayor Bloomberg created the new NYC & Company, merging the existing NYC & Company with NYC Big Events and NYC Marketing to create the world’s leading municipal marketing organization. Summer 2011-the City’s original culinary celebration and world’s first-ever
Restaurant Week-will take place July 11-24, 2011. For the 12th consecutive
season, prices for the prix-fixe three-course meals will remain $24.07 for
lunch and $35 for dinner (excluding beverages, taxes and gratuities). Diners
will be able to take advantage of the limited-time value Mondays through
Fridays; Saturdays are excluded and Sundays are optional for participating
restaurants.
 
“We are excited to begin commemorating NYC Restaurant Week’s vibrant history
and important milestone which will culminate with our dining program’s 20th
