TRAX Green Line and GREENbike Debut

Salt Lake City, UT (June 25, 2013) — Summer in Salt Lake has long meant golf, hiking and biking in the mountains, outdoor dining and open-air concerts. But now the city has taken a green leap forward. Salt Lake’s newly opened TRAX Green Line extension now connects downtown Salt Lake to Salt Lake City International Airport, as Salt Lake joins the growing ranks of major cities offering a rail connection to their air hub. Salt Lake has also just unveiled its new GREENbike urban bike-sharing program and is building its first streetcar line in decades. Thanks to these dramatic developments in environmentally sound transportation, visitors can experience firsthand how this dynamic Western gateway is transforming itself into one of the greenest cities in the United States.

TRAX Green Line

The new TRAX Green Line opened April 14 and the light rail takes 20 minutes to make the six-mile run between downtown Salt Lake City and Salt Lake City International Airport, with multiple stops. Trains run every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on weekends. The project that was four years in the works now allows visitors to travel seamlessly between airport and downtown. For passengers with layovers at Salt Lake City International Airport, it’s a chance to explore downtown – and diversions like the new City Creek Center – and still make it back in plenty of time for their connection.

GREENbike

Once downtown, visitors can take advantage of GREENbike, Salt Lake City’s new urban bike-sharing program. GREENbike debuted in early April 2013, with 10 docking stations around the city. Each station is within a leisurely ride from the next station, and bikes can ‘checked out’ for 30-minute trips. A 24-hour Access Pass is $5, while a seven-day Pass is just $15. Where to ride? The Salt Lake City Bikeways Map helps connect locals and visitors with the city’s urban environment. The map shows bike routes, public transit, trailheads, farmers markets, local parks, open space and community gardens.

Sugar House Streetcar

Salt Lake is in the vanguard of the movement to bring streetcars – still fixtures of major European cities – back to its streets. Streetcars offer yet another green solution to transportation and were the choice when it came time to reuse a two mile abandoned freight line corridor running east-west through residential neighborhoods of Salt Lake City. The first phase is called the Sugar House Streetcar Project, named for the hip residential Salt Lake neighborhood that it passes through. Sugar House is known for its small-scale shops and the expansive 110-acre Sugar House Park, the crown jewel of the Salt Lake park system, where visitors can join locals for jogging, biking and picnicking. The Sugar House Streetcar Project is currently under construction and will run from the 2100 South TRAX station along Sugarmont Avenue, ending at McClelland. It’s set to open in December 2013. Building this first line will also involve the creation of a greenway, a linear belt of public spaces that are suitable for walking, bicycling and other activities. The greenway will include plazas, Parley’s Trail and extensive landscaping, and promises to become one of the city’s most popular public spaces.

A New Development Emphasizes Urbanism in  

Utah’s Capital City

Salt Lake City (January 18, 2012) — A new urbanism is at work in downtown Salt Lake with a massive reinvention that will undoubtedly be a game changer for residents and visitors alike.

 

In March of 2012, 165 years since the founding of the city by Mormon settlers (when it was still part of Mexico), a new breed of city dwellers and tourists will experience a dynamic, walkable downtown where residents have returned to live, work and play. A 23-acre, multi-billion dollar project called City Creek Center is at the heart of the renaissance. Thanks to funding by partner City Creek Reserve, City Creek will open debt-free and is slated to be the first-ever Silver LEED Certified mixed-use development; a sustainably-designed, pedestrian community of residences, offices and retail stores across three expansive downtown blocks.

 

Other U.S. urban centers have been given a strong boost by mixed-use developments, such as Denver’s Cherry Creek and West Palm Beach’s City Place. By design, Salt Lake’s City Creek Center will also radically reshape Salt Lake’s urban core. Developed by Taubman Centers Inc., City Creek Center is adjacent to Temple Square and the Salt Palace Convention Center in the heart of downtown. This outdoor shopping center features fully retractable glass roofs to ensure a year-round, climate-controlled environment as well as a pedestrian skybridge over Main Street.  

 

The pathways in and around City Creek have been strategically designed to make shopping, eating and strolling along the tree-lined streets an ideal experience for pedestrians. City Creek’s unique mix of retail, restaurants, offices, condominiums and apartments is expected to revitalize downtown Salt Lake and turn it into a mecca for young professionals, empty nesters and visitors alike, drawn by the vibrant energy of the city’s new nucleus. Combined with the recent openings of two groundbreaking museums, the Natural History Museum of Utah and The Leonardo, it’s clear Salt Lake is in the midst of an urban Renaissance with a strong cultural slant.

 

Dinosaur fossils are just one of the many astounding exhibits at the newly opened Natural History Museum of Utah. The 161,000 square-foot, Gold LEED-Standard museum has eight permanent exhibit spaces featuring 1.2 million objects of natural history, and a 1,200 square-foot children’s gallery. The Leonardo–inspired by namesake Leonardo da Vinci–is a visionary interactive museum of science, technology, and art, housed in the former SLC Public Library. The Leonardo offers visitors exhibits, dialogs, hands-on workshops, performances and major traveling exhibitions.

 

While the exceptionally wide streets of Salt Lake were originally designed to allow a team of four oxen pulling a wagon to effortlessly turn around, transportation of a different sort is on the minds of 21st century planners. By late 2012, visitors will be able to ride the new Utah Transit Authority Airport TRAX Line into the heart of downtown, a connection that will take 20 minutes to reach City Creek Center, the centerpiece of Salt Lake’s dynamic downtown.

Increased Flights and a Ferry Service to be Organised(September 23rd, 2010 – Brades, Montserrat):  In anticipation of the significant number of persons that will be coming for the funeral on October 1, 2010 of Montserrat’s most-famous son Arrow, the Montserrat Tourist Board (MTB) wishes to announce increased access, both by air and sea, to cater to these travelers.  In addition to the regularly scheduled air services on Winair (www.fly-winair.com) and Fly Montserrat (www.fly-montserrat.com), several additional charter flights are being organised on Fly Montserrat.  The cost of a return ticket from Antigua on these special charters is US$250 per person.   Passengers can pay in EC$ or US$ cash or by credit card (Visa, Master Card or Discover Card).   Travelers are also advised to limit the amount of luggage they will be bringing, as the aircrafts can only take a very limited amount of baggage.  Along with an increased number of flights, a return ferry service will also operate during the week leading up to the funeral on Friday October 1, 2010.  Further detailed information on dates, frequency and times of departure will be circulated, as soon as information is confirmed regarding the number of persons wanting to travel by ferry.Persons wishing to travel to Montserrat for the funeral, whether on the special air charters or by ferry, are asked to contact the Montserrat Tourist Board by email at info@montserrattourism.ms, by phone at (664) 491 2231, by fax at (664) 491 7430.  The following information would be required:          Name of person traveling          Number of persons in the travel party         Time and date of arrival into Antigua         Airline and flight no. arriving into Antigua         Time and date of Departure from Antigua         Airline and flight no. for departure from Antigua         Indicate whether desirous of traveling  by air charters or ferry          Accommodation in Montserrat where you will be staying

THE MIGHTY ARROW, Soca King of the World, dies at 60.

The Mighty Arrow, Soca King of the World, dies at 60.

OLVESTON, Montserrat (Sept 15, 2010) – The Soca King of the World, Alphonsus “The Mighty Arrow” Cassell, died at his residence on the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat today at the age of 60. 

The international recording artiste was diagnosed with cerebral cancer in early 2009. He was airlifted to the neighbouring island of Antigua last week for treatment. 

His family wishes to thank the medical teams, friends and family who gave their support during the period of his illness. 

Arrow or “Phonzie”, as he was referred to by close friends and family, is responsible for taking the soca genre to the international music scene with his 1982 smash hit, Hot, Hot, Hot. 

Having won the local calypso competition on four occasions, the talents of the proud son of Montserrat were spotted by former Beatles manager, Sir George Martin, who  worked with Arrow to turn his focus to his recording and touring career. 
 
Arrow recorded no less than 22 studio albums with other notable hits including Long Time, Dancing Mood, O’La Soca and Groove Master. 
 
He has performed at concerts, music festivals and gala events across the globe. 
 
“His death is a great loss to the family, his native land of Montserrat and the music world,” said his brother, Justin “Hero” Cassell, another talented vocalist and songwriter, who worked with Arrow during his peak years.

– Squatters and Wasatch Grab More Gold at the 2010 World Beer Cup –

Salt Lake City (May 25, 2010) – Two of Utah’s standout local breweries, Salt Lake City’s Squatters and Park City’s Wasatch, both received gold medals recently at the 2010 World Beer Cup in Chicago. This not only highlights the impressive achievements and growth of Salt Lake’s brew pubs, it’s a welcome reminder of last year’s sweeping reforms of Utah’s archaic liquor laws, which included the elimination of the state’s private club system.

Salt Lake‘s legendary brewpubs are a wonderful social asset, especially when they’re combined with the city’s outstanding meeting facilities, variety of accommodations and dining options, vibrant cultural arts scene and world-class outdoor recreation. It’s what makes Salt Lake a formidable destination for any and all groups.

“We congratulate Squatters and Wasatch and are thrilled with their success,” commented an elated Scott Beck, President & CEO of the Salt Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Long-time visitors and locals always knew that our liquor laws were more of a perceived barrier to getting a drink in Utah. But that perception was often reality to many meeting professionals and potential visitors, sometimes taking Salt Lake and Utah out of the running altogether as a destination. Combined, these changes have put Salt Lake’s clubs and bars on par with those in most other states and, in turn, enhance Salt Lake’s meeting and tourism product-putting us in an incredible position when considering the many other attributes of Salt Lake.”

While Salt Lake has long been home to numerous brew pubs featuring award-winning brewmasters and an eclectic, diverse nightlife scene, Squatters and Wasatch have truly taken the lead.

“The competition has grown significantly since the first World Beer Cup in 1996, where there were 250 breweries competing for 61 gold medals. This year 642 breweries competed for 90,” explains Greg Schirf, founder of Wasatch Beers.

Wasatch’s drink-ably smooth Polygamy Porter medaled in the Session Beer Category, one of the fastest growing categories at the competition with 28 entries. This is a dark, 4% alcohol by volume, medium-bodied ale with inviting chocolate and malty flavors that fade into a slightly dry, silky smooth finish. It’s Polygamy Porter’s second World Beer Cup medal and Wasatch Beers’ fifth.

Squatters’ Black Forest Schwarzbier medaled in the German-Style Schwarzbier category against an imposing 38 entries. This tasty German lager has smooth roasted undertones and is lightly hopped.

“If you want a great Schwarzbier, you don’t have to go to Bavaria,” said Jenny Talley, Squatters’ brewmaster for the past 19 years. This is Squatters’ ninth medal from the prestigious event and Black Forest Schwarzbiers’ second.

Brewers from six continents earned awards from an elite international panel of judges in the 2010 Brewers Association World Beer Cup ─the world’s largest-ever commercial beer competition. The eighth bi-annual competition announced awards to brewers from 19 countries ranging from Australia and Italy to Iceland and Japan.
