St.Kitts –> Honeymoon Destination for Caribbean Week in NY…

St. Kitts Selected as Honeymoon Destination for Caribbean Week

** Also Provides Honeymoon and Cake for Wedding Couple During the Caribbean Tourism Organization?s Caribbean Week in New York **

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Reinforcing the island’s emerging reputation as a top destination for Caribbean weddings and honeymoons, St. Kitts has been selected as the honeymoon site for the wedding couple who will be married at the Caribbean Fair at Grand Central Station on Wednesday, June 6, 2012. The public wedding is one of several activities being held as part of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s annual Caribbean Week in New York, June 4 to 9.

“St. Kitts is extremely pleased to have been chosen as the honeymoon location for this year’s lucky wedding couple,” said Senator Ricky Skerritt, Minister of Tourism & International Transport. “Destination weddings and honeymoons is a niche market that we have been targeting through our various marketing and sales efforts because it is one that we feel is a natural fit with our destination product attributes. We are grateful that our market outreach is having an increased awareness for St. Kitts as a competitive option within this key market segment, and we expect that this New York City event will help us gain further visibility.”

St. Kitts is donating a honeymoon to the lucky couple, Mr. John Gordon Andre Millard and Ms. Tricialouise Gurley, in celebration of their nuptials that will be part of the Caribbean Week in New York activities for 2012. As a result of the island’s partnering with American Airlines, the couple will receive two business class tickets to St. Kitts in addition to a four-night stay at the St. Kitts Marriott, provided courtesy of the resort. The St. Kitts Marriott is also providing complimentary spa treatments at the Emerald Mist Spa to the couple.

In addition, St. Kitts will bestow the cake that the couple will cut and host them for their cake-cutting ceremony, which will immediately follow their 2:00 p.m. vow exchange. St. Kitts has provided the cake for the Caribbean Week wedding for the past several years in a row, but this is only the second time the island has been selected as the honeymoon destination for the newlyweds. Rum will be provided courtesy of St. Kitts’ own award-winning Brinley Gold Rum.

As a result of this promotion, St. Kitts will be publicized as a premiere wedding and honeymoon destination to a key geographic market, reaching hundreds of people who are expected to attend the Caribbean Fair and wedding, thereby also supporting American Airlines’ non-stop flight from JFK to St. Kitts.

Most recently, the destination ranked #3 on a list of the 10 Best Islands in the World by US News & World Report following its ranking as #1 on the publication’s list of the 16 Best Caribbean Vacations in summer 2011. On February 9, 2012, St. Kitts was named one of “5 Caribbean Islands to Discover Now” by MSNBC. It was also named one of the “Top 12 Spots that should be on your list for 2012” by Caribbean Travel + Life magazine and the island’s Brimstone Hill Fortress was named one of “10 Great Places To Explore The World’s Best-Kept Secrets” by USA Today. Last year, St. Kitts was named a top destination for 2011 by both AOL Travel and British Airways.

Located in the northern Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, it offers a diverse tourism product developed from the destination’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and rich history. The island’s stunning variety of tourism attractions include hiking through the tropical rainforest, riding the scenic railway that connects the island’s former sugar plantations, visiting the Caribelle Batik factory, touring Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, the only man-made UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Eastern Caribbean, and more traditional vacation pastimes such as watersports, golf, shopping, tennis, gourmet dining, gaming at St. Kitts’ exclusive casino or simply relaxing on one of the island’s sandy beaches. Sea Turtle Interpretive Center to be developed in St.Kitts

Sea Turtle Interpretive Center To Be Developed In St. Kitts

‘Turtle Team’ Donors in Cross Channel Swim Raise More Than $10,000 for the Project as Sea Turtle Nesting Season Begins

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – In keeping with the island’s commitment to sustainable tourism, St. Kitts is pleased to announce that it will soon be home to a new Sea Turtle Interpretive Center.  The Center will be developed by the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network (SKSTMN).

The Sea Turtle Interpretive Center is set to be a year-round tourist venue and will be an important addition to St. Kitts’ expanding sustainable tourism product.  In addition to aiding in the preservation of sea turtles, the Center will also create jobs and add another eco-friendly attraction to the island for both visitors and locals alike.

“It would also aid tremendously in educating visitors and residents about these critically endangered animals and about the irreplaceable marine resources of the island,” said Dr. Kimberly Stewart, who heads up the SKSTMN.  “We really hope that the Center will inspire people to become actively engaged in marine conservation.”

Upon construction, the Center will serve as the SKSTMN’s orientation center for tours and field trips, a research station, an area to showcase the organization’s local craft and jewelry making, a gift shop and an area for members and visitors to seek refuge from the elements during patrols.  As their centralized base of operations, it will also allow the SKSTMN to expand their employee base from nine sea turtle technicians to at least fifteen plus ancillary support staff.  The Center will be located on St. Kitts’ Keys Beach and cost approximately $75,000 to complete.

To help raise funds to build the new Center, the SKSTMN assembled a team of swimmers to participate in the 10th Annual StarMile2.5 Nevis-St. Kitts Cross Channel Swim on March 25, 2012.  The 34 members of the “Turtle Team” swam the 2.5 mile channel from St. Kitts to Nevis, raising more than $10,000 that will go entirely to the development of the Center.

This news is ideally timed, with sea turtle nesting season on St. Kitts having officially begun in March.  The SKSTMN offers eco-tours on St. Kitts from April 15 through June 15 annually, wherein guests can accompany the organization’s research team from 8pm – 12am to observe nesting female leatherback turtles.  Guests also receive a complimentary local beverage and packet of information about sea turtles.  Individuals can also adopt a turtle, learn more about the satellite tagging project, make a donation, or shop the SKSTMN’s online store.  The SKSTMN is a community based non-profit organization, so all proceeds are used to fund the St. Kitts sea turtle program.

Founded in January 2003, the SKSTMN monitors nesting sea turtle populations & acts as an advocate for the strengthening of sea turtle protection laws.  Over the past 9 years, it has developed a broad-based program incorporating leatherback night patrols, morning beach monitoring, Sea Turtle Camp, school programs, leatherback ecotours and more.  To to inquire about arranging a tour or simply to learn more about SKSTMN, contact 1-869-764-6664 or visit www.stkittsturtles.org.

News from !6th Annual St.Kitts Music Festival.

Morgan Heritage and Courtney Pine Join the LineUp
for the 16th Annual St. Kitts Music Festival

Two More World Class Musical Acts to Perform at the Festival’s ‘Sweet 16’ Anniversary

BASSETERRE (April 3, 2012) – St. Kitts announces that world-class musical acts Morgan Heritage and Courtney Pine will be performing at this year’s 16th  Annual St. Kitts Music Festival, which will take place June 28-30, 2012. They are joining Roberta Flack and Damian Marley, who have already been announced as performers for the event.

“A mix of great musical acts in one incredible destination makes our festival an experience like no other,” said Mr. Faron Lawrence, Chairman of the Festival’s Executive Committee. “I have no doubt that the blending of Morgan Heritage and Courtney Pine, with their roots-like music styles and history of exhilarating performances, will reinforce the reputation of the St. Kitts Music Festival as the most diverse musical event in the Caribbean.”

Oftern referred to as “reggae royalty,” Morgan Heritage is more than just a legendary reggae band.  They are known as a revolution, a family, a force of nature and a crew of five independent artists on an unsurpassed musical mission whenever they get together.  Lukes, Una, Gramps, Mr. Mojo and Peter Morgan – all children of roots reggae icon Denroy Morgan – draw on new wave, punk, hip-hop, dancehall and R&B, but manage to ground all of their musical explorations in the sound that is in their blood: Roots Reggae.

That finely honed modern roots identity has made Morgan Heritage one of reggae’s most enduringly successful acts.  The group is known for chart-topping hits such as “Don’t Haffi Dread,” “Reggae Bring Back Love,”  “New Time, New Sign,” “Down By The River,”  “Meskal Square,”  “Jah Seed,”  “Three In One,” “She’s Still Loving Me,” “A Man is Still A Man,” “Three In One,” “Your Best Friend,” “Tell Me How Come?” and “I’m Coming Home.”

Courtney Pine is one of the UK’s most celebrated and original saxophone musicians.  He is also known to be a multi-instrumentalist who studied the clarinet and excels in playing the flute and keyboards.  His most recent work has integrated modern British music like drum and bass and UK garage with contemporary jazz styles.  Key to Pine’s success is his willingness to stretch the boundaries of his genre.  He has, sometimes controversially, combined traditional acoustic jazz with reggae, soul, drum ‘n’ bass and afro-beat.  Over the course of his career, Pine has covered Nirvana, played on the main stage at Glastonbury and appeared at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday concert at Wembley Stadium. He runs his own band and integrates many contemporary musicians in his performances.

Pine, who has been on the forefront of Britain’s jazz scene for the past 20 years, was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2000 and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2009 Queen’s New Year Honours for services to jazz music.

Morgan Heritage and Courtney Pine will both take to the stage on Friday night, the second night of the three-night event.  They are the most recent additions to the lineup for the 16th Annual St. Kitts Music Festival, which will be announced in its entirety in the coming weeks.

Now in its 16th consecutive year, the Festival attracts both locals and visitors alike. Basseterre, St. Kitts (February 2, 2012) – The groundbreaking ceremony for a 20-acre Agro-Tourism Demonstration Farm took place on January 31, 2012. The farm is located on the site of a former sugar cane plantation, Sir Gillies, and is scheduled for completion in two years. The project is a collaboration between the Governments of St. Kitts & Nevis and The Republic of China (Taiwan).

“This project is unlike any other in this part of the Caribbean,” said Senator Ricky Skerritt, Minister of Tourism & International Transport. “It is entertaining while also being educational, and represents a unique marriage between agriculture and tourism.  The Farm is an opportunity to showcase and promote community tourism and I commend it.”

In keeping with St. Kitts’ commitment to sustainability, the Farm will incorporate various “green” elements in its construction and upkeep.  It will feature local indigenous fruits and vegetables alongside crops originating from Taiwan, so that visitors can appreciate the crop diversity of both countries.  A Botanical Garden will have medicinal plants from both St. Kitts & Nevis and Chinese medical herbs.  Also gracing the gardens will be a traditional tea-house.  A visual highlight of the Farm will be a “Sugarcane Labyrinth” in the shapes of both St. Kitts and Taiwan, commemorating the sugar industry that once was an economic driver in both nations.

Once operational, the Farm will conduct workshops and seminars for local youths who want to pursue opportunities in agriculture.  The design of the Farm was created by Taiwanese landscape and architecture experts who were sent to St. Kitts to compose a blueprint for the project.

To commemorate the groundbreaking, the Prime Minister of St. Kitts & Nevis, the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, joined with Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), His Excellency Miguel Li-Jey Tsao, in planting a memorial tree.  The ceremony also included the opening of the preparatory office of the Farm.

Montserrat’s Volcano Hazard Level Lowered! Nov 2011 news.

Date: November 4, 2011

Written by Nerissa Golden

Montserrat’s Volcano Hazard Level Lowered

BRADES, Montserrat (November 4, 2011)The National Disaster Preparedness and Advisory Committee has taken a decision to reduce the hazard level of Soufriere Hills Volcano from 3 to 2, which will allow day-time access to Zone C.

Zone C comprises Cork Hill, Delvins, Weekes, Foxes Bay and Richmond Hill. Note there will be no access to St Georges Hill since is it now in Zone V.

Daytime access means that persons can visit these areas using a vehicle from 8:00 to 4:00pm. Children can only enter accompanied by their parents. Entry will be at a manned gate on the Corkhill Road adjacent to the condominiums on the southern side of the Belham Valley. Caution is urged when driving in the area as many of the roads are overgrown and are in poor condition.

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory has advised that the volcano is in a continued state of pause which is now the longest since the eruption began in 1995. The current pause has lasted 629 days. (Theprevious longest pause of 625 days occurred between 1998 and 1999).

The MVO Director, Dr. Paul Cole, has also stated that the frequency of pyroclastic flows occurring from the remaining lava dome has decreased.

Although the decision has been made to reduce the hazard level, residents and visitors need to be vigilant at all times because volcanic activity can still increase with very little or no warning.  Those persons entering should keep their car radios tuned to ZJB Radio at all times when in Zone C. They should also carry a battery powered transistor radio and mobile phone with them if they leave their cars.

Persons entering Zone C should exercise extreme caution generally and especially in crossing the Belham River Valley when it is raining heavily because of the possibility of lahars/mudflows. The crossing point is at the bottom of Dr Woods Road.

Zone V on the volcanic risk map remains closed. It is still in the full time exclusion zone.

All players and guests will enjoy the hospitality and renowned service of the St. Kitts Marriott Resort & Royal Beach Casino, the host hotel for the event.  The Admiral’s Cup Pro-Am is managed by The Golf Connection and supported by the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, the Four Seasons Resort Nevis and American Airlines.  For more information about the event or to register, visit www.nevisproam.com or call               484-762-1185       .

St. Accommodations range from intimate plantation inns to larger hotels and resorts.
