Arcade Fire
September 22, 2011

As a salute to the city they call home, Montréal’s Arcade Fire will be performing a free outdoor concert on September 22, 2011, at Place des Festivals in the Quartier des spectacles. The show will be presented as part of the POP Montreal International Music Festival. After reaping the Grammy and Juno awards for “Album of the Year”, as well as the Brit Award for “Best International Album” with their third studio record, The Suburbs, Arcade Fire want to thank Montréal. Some 75,000 fans are expected to attend this exciting event.

The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal’s new home

Under the direction of conductor Kent Nagano, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM) will take up residence at its new home, L’Adresse symphonique, on September 7, 2011. Designed with music lovers in mind, the new OSM hall will offer an intimate concert experience and unsurpassed acoustic quality. With seating for up to 1,900 guests, the hall will allow concertgoers to feel the music like never before. This season’s program features works from Québécois composers Claude Vivier, Gilles Tremblay and Julien Bilodeau, as well as classics like Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony featuring the uplifting “Ode to Joy.”

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts opens its new pavilion

For the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, October 4, 5 and 6 will mark the opening of the new Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion, an innovative expansion project designed to provide a coherent look at the history of Québec and Canadian art. The pavilion includes the addition of the Bourgie Concert Hall, which has been fashioned from a Romanesque Revival church that is more than a century old. With seating for just 444, the hall will bring visitors close to the action for numerous concerts and activities throughout the year.

The Society for Arts and Technology expands and improves

Moving from contemporary art to music, change is in the air at the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT). The SAT, which is dedicated to the production, creation and dissemination of digital culture, recently began a major expansion of its infrastructure. This includes the addition of the Sensorium, a floor entirely devoted to multi-sensory exploration and designed to bring together the technological, visual, and culinary arts.

Le 2-22: gateway to the Quartier des spectacles
Soon to be the gateway to Montréal’s Quartier des spectacles, the 2-22 – a new cultural centre on Sainte-Catherine Street East (corner Saint-Laurent Boulevard) – is an urban revitalization project in one of the city’s most legendary neighbourhoods. Currently under construction, the 2-22 will be a spacious and modern six-storey building complete with lobby atrium, bar and rooftop terrace. An eco-building targeting LEED certification, it will house important cultural organizations the likes of La Vitrine (Montréal’s virtual box office), Artexte – Centre d’information en art, and Galerie VOX, to name a few.

A new centre to promote the arts

Phoebe Greenberg, philanthropist as well as founder and director of DHC/Foundation for contemporary art, extends her passion for the arts with the PHI Centre. Scheduled to open in November, the Centre will occupy two amalgamated historic buildings in Old Montréal. Its mission will be to promote artistic creation in the fields of music, film, architecture, design and new media. It will house audiovisual recording studios, two multipurpose performance venues, two restaurants, and an archive centre for research related to short films. Shows, exhibitions and experimentation labs will be part of the Centre’s cultural calendar events.

Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour
October 2 and 3, 2011; March 20, 21 and 22, 2012; July 6 and 7, 2012

Cirque de Soleil weaves its circus artistry into the musical genius of the King of Pop himself in their all-new production, Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour. Jackson’s powerful music and lyrics drive an electrifying fusion of visuals, dance, music and fantasy that literally turns his signature moves upside down. Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour is slated to thrill and amaze Montréal audiences three times over the next year, beginning with the world premiere this October and returning again in March and July 2012.

New restaurants : Laurier Gordon Ramsay, Le Bremner and Maison Bouloud
Laurier Gordon Ramsay
For a taste of something different, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay was brought in to update a Montréal institution, Laurier BBQ. Now called Laurier Gordon Ramsay, the restaurant, which re-opened its doors on August 10, will continue to cater to families, though certain aspects of the menu and the décor have been changed under chef Ramsay’s direction.

Le Bremner – A new foodie hotspot in Old Montréal
Canadian chef sensation and Iron Chef America winner Chuck Hughes recently opened Le Bremner in Montréal. Just like his other restaurant, Garde-Manger, Le Bremner is hidden below street level, in picturesque Old Montréal. A sort of small, cozy “seafood diner”, the restaurant’s menu features such items as must-try lobster parfait and kimchee snow crab with crispy rice cake, and includes succulent non-seafood related dishes as well. With a growing reservation list, Le Bremner is already one of the hottest foodie spots in town.

Daniel Boulud opens a new restaurant in a Montréal institution
The internationally-acclaimed Chef Daniel Boulud (DANIEL – a 3-star Michelin restaurant in NYC, Café Boulud, db Bistro Moderne) will be opening a new restaurant at Montréal’s legendary Ritz-Carlton Hotel in early 2012. Maison Boulud will be uniquely adapted to Montréal’s setting, culture and tastes. Boulud plans to use many local products to create season-inspired menus, and to draw upon his traditional French culinary roots and standards of hospitality to offer a world-class dining experience. As for the atmosphere, Boulud is aiming for an “upscale casual” feel.
